antivirus

I used to run norton av and on occasions it warned me a virus had been detected on a web site and prevented it from getting onto my pc.
But since using avg free, I never get these type of warnings. Until today it had never detected amything - then all of a sudden when I'm not even browsing the net, up pops a box displaying 'virus detected in temp internet cache'
Two things bother me:
1 why didn't it actually stop the virus getting there in the first place - and seeing it was there, has it actually done anything? I'm running Trend Housecall now just to see
2 the popup window disappears after about 10 seconds - and leaves the virus there as the default - if your back was turned for 30 seconds you'd miss the fact it had ever reported and the virus would still be there
