Yes and no - VCDs will play on a PC (but you might need to download some codecs) but should also play on most DVD players - it is worth noting however that a VCD is not DVD quality and is more akin to VHS quality.

It was originally used along with video compression as a method of getting movies and video onto a standard CD which normally wouldnt fit (hence loss in picture and sound quality) - its becoming obsolete now with the advent of home DVD writers and the drop in price that has accompanied the uptake of them.

In the past I bought VCDs and was always disappointed with the quality so think twice before parting with your cash - also very few if any producers release their content on VCD so if you see a mainstream title (adult or otherwise) on VCD then chances are its a pirate.

Many thanks for the advice :-) I'd obviously prefer to get DVDs, but I suggested other formats because titles seem very hard to get hold of and thought I'd cast my net further. I realise that the majority of them will have a mosaic, but would still like to find some. Anyone know anywhere that sells them?

You sure about that Jay?
They're pretty much standard mpeg conversions. I've never needed to download a codec to just play a VCD, unless it wasn't a VCD and just an Xvid or Divx file banged on to a disc.

An excellent supplier of Japanese DVDs is

XonAir.com

See the links page "video suppliers - abroad" page 2 for a review of this supplier.

I would recommend them. Used the many times and no problem.

Sure? Nope which is why I put might lol

I have bought some disks (which may well have been DivX or have been encoded with some strange codec) and made some as well that needed codecs and general messing about with configurations etc to play properly.

VCDs quality is hit & miss which is why their cheap

My experience with all VCDS is that they are proned to freezing
and once that happens its pretty much game over
so they're really not even as good as a second hand rental in that respect

But the trouble with Japanese DVD's is they're all the same - the girl lies there and makes squeaking noises while some Yacuzaesque gangster stereotype assaults her with a battery of multi coloured sex toys. He ends up screwing her with his 3" willy after you wait about half an hour. Apart from that they spend their time pissing in the street or dripping candle wax and thinking of elaborate ways to tie the girls up.

No Gaijin Zone :)
