Don't you think 20 years for drug smuggling is reasonable when independance protestors get this.
Papuan independence activists jailed for treason
A court in Indonesia's troubled eastern Papua province has sentenced two pro-independence activists to 15 and 10 years respectively after finding them guilty of treason.
The court in the capital Jayapura said Philep Karma and fellow activist Yusac Pakage had "betrayed" Indonesia by flying an outlawed Papua separatist flag last December.
Karma was sentenced to 15 years, while Pakage was jailed to 10 years.
Prosecutors had recommended the judge sentence them each to just five years in jail.
"Both of them showed no remorse for their actions and have repeatedly claimed they were not Indonesian citizens," Judge Radiantoro said.
The pair, who repeatedly shouted "Free Papua" before and after their trial sessions, have appealed the verdicts.
Both men were being tried along with two other activists for hoisting the flag in Jayapura on December 1, 2004.

Before these latest incidences with indonesia, not to mention the Bali bombing,i read that Australia was all for cozying up to the ASEAN countries especially Indonesia, and to basically say fuck you to Great Britain.
I see now they want to get to know us again, and want our skills over there, kind of ironic after bad-mouthing us for years.
Indonesia has always been a bit of a nasty place anyway, right from when it declared independence from the Netherlands.

Given their legal system is based on "guilty until proven innocent"
all I would say is justice doesn't exist in Indonesia
If the schappelle corby case were tried in OZ it would be thrown out for the simple reason, crucial evidence that would have returned an innocent verdict was somehow not collected
Indonesia might not be a dictatorship anylonger but it still stinks of corruption
If your going to judge a sentence use the bali Bombings as the yard stick
2 years for killing 200 people...1 rule for them & 1 rule for us
Now if the flying of the independence flag got thousands killed in riots fair enough
I'd expect the Bali 9 drug couriers will get the Death Sentence

We've recently had an official visit from Indonesia and last week the Deputy Chinese PM was here. An MP greeted the Chinese at Parliament with a Tibet flag and their feckin security guys first tried to get the police to remove him then when that failed they stood in front of him to screen their head bastard from being offended. In the end they were all taken in by a side entrance.
Of course, both visits are to improve trade relations. Which means, as you can guess, even more imports of cheap goods made by sweated labour.

PS I was shopping last week for a woolen sweater: lots of Acrylic made in China. I expect the Chinese shops are full of woolen sweaters made in NZ....oh yeah!!!!!!

Its the tip of the iceberg and with Chinas population it will force all the other cheap producing nations out of the market if allowed to
Apparently quotas for clothing & textiles which were keeping many poor third world countries afloat have expired recently and put up for sale
Not surprisingly China picked up most of these quotas, under pricing all of them but due to good business management just the use of slavery IMHO
Slavery is well and truly alive in the 21st century
How any country can compete with wages as low as US2-00 a day is beyond
Globalisation sucks big time in this respect

I thought this might be a reference to the Aussie tourist caught with cannabis in her luggage and got 20 years. Apparently, Aussies are 'boycotting' Bali as a tourist destination in protest, and some are even requesting their Tsunami donations back.
The smuggler swears blind it was planted, and there are some disturbing parts in the story that I'm sure Buttsie might elaborate on, but it doesn't seem a 'solid conviction' from what I have read, hence the mass backlash from Australians

Thats not quite true Ace,tourists in the main are still heading to Bali
probably ownly because One bright eyed smartass is offering a service where for AUS8-00 a bag your luggage is completely sealed in clear plastic
by a machine.I'd say without this many wouldn't being going
Its true that some idiots are linking this with the tsunami appeal and a travel agent has said no travel to Indonesia but on the whole its travel as normal
Personally I think their idiots for venturing there given the Bombing and now
the exposure of how their legal system works
The staggering facts are that the bag containing the 4ks of dope wasn't fingerprinted or weighed making it impossible for the defence to prove where on the travel route the cannabis jumped aboard and which baggage handler might have been involved
You can draw your own conclusions as to why
Incompetence or a Corrupt System?
cheers

It'll do the same for Indonesia's reputation, that midnight Express did for Turkey. One of the worrying factors in the conviction is that the Indonesians didn't even have the facilities to check for fingerprints on the plastic bag containing the drugs, to see if her prints were there or not. The law is possession equates to guilt, but you wouldn't expect real justice to exist in a 3rd world country (88% Muslim).
