169 IP address

Help needed.... my laptop has a 169.x.x.x IP address so I can't currently use my broadband connection.
I've tried disabling the adapter to restart the DHCP client, but that didn't work. I've also tried to reinstall my ethernet adaptors, done a system restore as well as going into ipconfig and doing a release then restore. Nada!!!!
Does anyone here have any other suggestions? I'm running Windows XP
