I recall one year, the dealers and players got together to wind up the commentator, who proved he had no sense of humour at all. All eight competitors ended up going all in on the first hand, having all been dealt incredible hands---and all the sad tosspot with the transatlantic accent behind the microphone could think of was how they were going to be able to make three minutes of play stretch out to a full hour of telly.

Incidentally, the famous "wanker" show on Countdown revealed Mr Whiteley's less humorous side. When one of the competitors said, "You've got a pair of wankers," Richard's eyes hardened and he gave the impression that if a fluffy kitten was passing by, he'd rip its head off and shit down its neck.

I thought it was Whiteley that said "A pair of wankers."

No, it was a Scots contestant--an Aberdonian with an Italian name. Gino something or other. Whiteley was not amused in the slightest.
