I disagree.
Both men shone in their respective fields. If they hadn't we wouldn't have heard of them. Perhaps they could have achieved more but they made sure they had a bloody good time while they were on this Earth.
As stated somewhere else on this forum Pete Doherty is a long streak of piss compared to hell-raisers like Reed and Moon.

you are of course right. russel was shite. but in a truly great way. the devils, tommy and whore were abysmal pieces of work but utterly compelling. russel was the british roger corman. utterly bollocks but totally necessary.

rasputin - I give you an A-

Russell was David Lean compared with the "talent" that is Michael Winner.

If you think The Devils was shite (I think it's one of his best), then steer clear of The Lair Of The White Worm. Utter liquefied bowel movements.

Some are of the belief that Russell did his best work for TV during the sixties, especially his portraits of famous composers. And with Altered States and Crimes of Passion, he made two very different and remarkable films of the eighties, both slightly ahead of their time.

Tommy, however, seems too stodgy, and perhaps slightly too late, for its pop art trappings that were never going to sit easy with Townshend's bloated, conceptualised self-regard (idea-wise Quadrophenia was sharper, but has aged badly - a nostalgia show on mopeds).

Tommy cost around $5m to make, but took around $18m in the US alone.
