Folks,
I paid a cheque into my account three weeks ago, was told the cheque would clear between 3 and 5 working days as per........................got my bank statement in yesterday, dont usually study it that much, but after a quick look through i couldnt see the cheque i paid in showing up anywhere. Slightly concerned i phoned direct banking to be informed that no cheque had been paid in. Baffled, i looked through my wallet and luckily i still had the receipt from the branch that i paid the cheque into.
I went back into the branch and the manager told me that the cashier has "forgot to log it onto the system and never processed the cheque" but he went onto say that because i never incurred any charges during this period i wasn't entitled to any compensation even though they admit it's there fault.
Surely i should be able to charge the bank for their 'error'? as we all know they would be charging the living daylights out of us if it was the other way around?
Any advice would be appreciated!

What would you charge the bank for? If it was an interest earning account they "owe" you the interest. If it had caused you to incur charges for an inadvertent overdraft, again, a refund.
But inconvenience, concern, worry....they don't give a bugger.
All you can do is write and ask for an apology...don't hold your breath.
I had an investment mature and it was paid into my UK bank a/c. ?10,000 and my bank let it sit there earning less than 1% interest. There was a time when they would have advised me where it would have been better invested.

Your next step is a detailed letter to the Banks Complaints department

Above all else state exactly what you want

They'll either say yes or no but you won't know unless you ask

After that there is most likely a Regulatory body that oversees the banking Industry you could contact

In the end your are most likely only going to get some piddling little amount of accrued interst you missed out on but you never know

I worked in banking for 16 years in Australia and have seen cash amounts given out to complainants largely just to shut them up-bribes if you will

But having previously worked for a bank, unless you can prove that you have suffered a financial loss as a result e.g. loss of interest, charges for "bounced" items as a result of this credit not being posted to your account, I don't think you will get much joy.

I'm also trying to work out what the catch is with the "bank complaints" website - i.e. what they get if you're successful in your claim is unclear - is it like those accident compensation firms that seem to take all the compensation as their fees?
