I love Gene but I must take issue with this. The Numero Uno rock bassist has to be the extraordinary Geddy Lee of Rush. By God can that guy play bass!

Oh, and the best bass player of all time is Jaco Pastorius. RIP. A jazz-fusion player who could play rings around Sheehan or Geddy Lee.
If we're talking hard rock/heavy metal, then the all time great Cliff Burton has to be considered. Listen to the three albums he did with Metallica.
Don't forget Steve harris from Iron Maiden.
