Well i'm pretty new to this whole p2p thing, but I don't think slow downloads is that unusual.
It varies a lot for me. Last week an episode of Lost took about ten hours! That's on a 1mb broadband connection. But the Alias premier only took four hours. I'd assumed it was down to how many other people were downloading at the same time.
I've spoken to a lot of the people on another board I go to, most of whom have quicker connections than me...and none of them seemed to think the downloading time I mentioned was unusual.
I don't know all the technical terms yet...but this thing you mentioned about losing "packets"...does that mean your download doesn't play properly? Not sure what to recommend if that's the case. I use Bit Lord, which has always worked fine for me......slow but sure.

Speed comes down to the speed of who your downloading it off...
example
You 2048 kbits (2mbps), which gives you a real speed of 256KBps, so 4 seconds per meg, so allow for latancy and overheads, and your looking at 5-6 seconds per meg.
Now if your downloading from a cable user they have 128kbps upload, so 16KBps, thats the MAX so allow for latancy and overheads and realistically they have 13-14Kbps at best, this is regardless of if they have 1mb broadband or 40mb broadband, cables upstream is lower usually at 128kbps, however i believe they are upping this to 300kbps so 28KBps MAX.
DSL users have an average of 256kbps, so 32KBps upload after latancy and overheads about 28-29KBps.
Now your there with your vacume 256kb download speed, trying to suck 256 thru a hole thats big enough for 14-28KB, NOT GONNA HAPPEN!
Now lets say ur downloading from them at 28KB, what happens when another user wants the file ? CHOP, u both get 13kb, yes i know 28kb divided by 2 isnt 13 but u get double overheads

, another user wants the file, CHOP 10KB each, the user your downloading from is downloading files CHOP or browsing the net CHOP or doanloading emails CHOP...
Lots of factors determine your download speed, so you cant say "My line is 2mb it should take me 4 seconds to download 1mb file.

Would have thought the burst forum
the place to post if you haven't already done so
Reading about ISPs & P2Ps recently theres seems to be a conspiracy between ISPs of limiting the amount of traffic through certain Ports which just happen to be the ones that P2Ps tell their users to use
cheers

1 of the main factors I have found recently with alot of P2P Software, including BitTorrent, is that there are a Fenominal amount of assholes who use various programs to monitor/adjust their bandwidth in Up or Down limits, & they try to Rip as much content as they can, while limiting the up transfer to as small as possible (I.E. Leechers).
However, I do agree with "Cenobitez", your ISP, Modem Speed, amount of ppl trying to share (up or down) the same file as you has ALOT to do with how much transfer of data you can achieve.
P.S. that is mostly in Easy Speak, for others not in TECH mode can understand LOL, I am a bit of a Tech Head myself, & always have to adjust my speech to those who get confused to Tech Heads =))
