Canon DSLR Users - Linkage Issues

I recently (about 9-12 months ago) upgraded all my kit, from an EOS 5 and 10 Film SLR to Eos D60 and D10, i got rid of my old flash and bought the top of the range Canon EX 580 Speedlite, bought the vert grips, etc spend 1000s on the stuff...
Howver my question to those of you who use Canon DSLR's is, is there issues with the flash linkage to the camera ?
If i shoot up and sideways with the camera say ley on my back shooting up on a portrait angle, the flash loses contact with the hot shoe on BOTH Cameras.
If i knock the camera into Green Square and use the onboard flash its perfect, the with all other settings, but if i knock the flash into ETTL metering on Program, its conatantly under exposed, id guess at 2-3 stops, and the issue is the same on both cameras and all lenses, yet is i knock it into manual its sound.
Now i thought the flash was screwed so i had that checked out and tried it on on canon cybershot perfect.
So i thought maybe the camera? so i tried an old cobra 700 i had lying about and that is about 3/4 over/under which is down to no sensor so i can forgive that.
So the issue seems to be Canon Camera and Canon Flash issues, i have since spoken to a chap who uses a Eos 1d mk2, and he says his is very similar unless he's using a catchlight or fillin flash, but dedicated use its the same, only he has the 540 flash, which is the model below my mine, so i want to rtry my flash on his camera.s
Anyway I'm sure someone on here uses Canon dSLR's since they are leading the market.
Just wondering what your experience is ?
