Geezer Of The Week

I'd like to nominate Neil French, an advertising exec who spoke his mind at an advertising industry event in Toronto. He had the balls to stand up and say women didn't get to the top in advertising because they were "crap". We'll, whether they are or are not crap in advertising, we can't judge. We'll just have to accept Neil French?s industry insight into the matter. But I'm nominating Neil as 'Geezer Of The Week' because of his totally un PC outburst. In these Nancy boy times his blokeish audacity is like a breath of fresh air. He didn't give a fuck, he spoke his mind with no regard to whether anybody liked it or not. Sadly, like so many martyrs, he got the chop (due to corporate cunts terrified of controversy and adverse publicity). But he can hold is head high. Neil French is 'a Geezer' of the highest order.

So, a sweeping generalisation about half the world's population is deemed laudable these days, is it? I have to say that, from my limited experience of advertising at the sharp end (as someone who is having things touted to him in newspapers, magazines and on telly and radio), virtually everyone who works in advertising is a wanker of the first order.

Hope my ignorance (and similar uneducated proclamation as the ad exec) deserves the same accolade as Mr French.

(Oh, and I'm excluding from my post anyone who works on Guinness adverts; very high standard for decades---just a shame I can't stomach the stuff or I'd buy barrel-loads).

He could be right in an around about way

The glass ceiling has long been talked about and I think it must exist given how many women are opting to become self-employed as opposed to climbing the corporate ladder

If this is the case then you have the BEST turning their backs on the system
because they've seen the previous generation hit the glass ceiling of male bias(why promote a women who's going to get pregnant sooner or later etc)and thought "No Thanks"

I can only speak about what I've seen & read in Australia and everything point to this Phenomenon occuring

75 percent of all small businesses that are successful are run by females
Last time I saw the stat I think there were 750,000 small businesses in OZ

You don't have to be einstein to know that leaves are bit of a gap in the talent pool on the female side

cheers

Don't know about that, but I certainly deemed it amusing - worthy of much chortling and mirth. I mean, the sheer audacity of it. You?ve got to give the dude credit.

I must also confess some experience of the advertising world. In the mid 90's I spent much time on Canary Wharf being wined and dined by Northern & Shell ad execs eager to secure our moody account. Yes, there are many wankers in the ad industry, but as Deuce sagely pointed out; the same can be said of all industries. What I can add is that the agency that I used purchase much of our ad space through was created and run by a woman. Let's call her 'Susan'. I found I had a natural affinity with Susan - I quickly leaned that she from my own neighbourhood in the grim industrial north, and she had attended my local grammar school. Here was a lady who was not part of the metropolitan London set, yet had moved there, and after a spell working in junior roles, had set up her own agency, which was now bustling with employees and situated in an expensive looking office block in the heart of the Wharf. I was always in awe of Susan and would metaphorically doth my cap whenever invited to meetings - where I would hang onto her every word. Susan is a supremely capable advertising lady who has talent and 'balls'. She is most certainly not 'crap'.
