Have you read the manual that comes with your router?

Over the years I've had various routers and some flashed to show a connection whilst others had a staedy light.

Your question is a bit like someone saying "I've got a vehicle... should I put petrol, diesel or LPG in it?"

From painful experience if the ADSL light is flashing it generally means it cant sync and is not getting a signal - are you experiencing any problems?

you could have picked up something nasty that is hogging your resources, if the system is 'sending' data when idle (ie flickering) it might be using your email to send spam or something similar, hence slow up of system
try running the usual checks
