A huge proportion of todays singers haven't got the vocal strength or diction to be heard or understood over anything louder than a string quartet
in my experience

The only medium where you can truly see wether a singer has it is LIVE

The singers of the rock/heavy metal scene of the sixties/seventies(Coverdale,Gillan,Hagar)run rings around todays vocally challenged singers
with very few exceptions

Lyrically the weirdest has to be Michael Stipe of REM

Anyone who has a handle on him is obviously not of this planet

Then again a lot of songs are written in a drug induced haze so nobody really knows to be sure,just watch some interviews asking artists to explain the meaning of their songs

They don't make lyrics like they used to ..... the 80's was the time for them. I don't think Robbie 'fat boy' Williams or any of his counterparts could come anywhere close to a song like Whitesnake - Here I Go Again, sounds as good today as in 1987 .... the only irony being that while David Coverdale looks every part of a Hollywood Rock Star, he came from Salton-on-Sea .... but to your average American, Salton-on Sea sounds that idyllic backwater where you can relax and drink tea, without all the shit .... if only they knew!.

Walking in the Shadow of the Blues is also pure class for mine

Even Whitesnakes thinly veiled songs about hard loving/good/bad times
were never superficial because they were singing material they'd written and more thna likely lived out.Has got to make a difference performance wise

coverdale was with purple too around 1975 a very underated singer.to me williams IS OVERATED.!

How the fuck is David Coverdale underated?!?

Ask any rock fan and they'll tell you that on form he is hard to beat. Considering the 1987 album sold 8 mill plus in the US. plus he was in Deep Purple. I can think of a few singers that would want to be underated like that.
Glenn Hughes owned him in Purple though. Great voice
I'd rather watch Coverdale, Hughes, Blackmore, Paice, Lord as Purple than the line up with Ian Gillan doing the rounds today. They should hang it up. Without Blackmore and Gillan's voice is terrible now.

Coverdale came from Saltburn by the Sea, in Cleveland. He worked in a "boutique" selling suave menswear before joining Purple. Coverdale and Glenn Hughes vocals were sublime, different to Gillan but equally as good.

Williams is a sham, a pale copy of Mercury, Daltry etc without a decent voice.

Superficial crap rules the world today ... listen to this current hit from S. Korea and it could be a hit anyehere in the world by just changing the language. It's written to a formula like the theme tune to any soap opera

But people fall for it over and over again.
