Carved out quite a niche for himself playing the bad guy in mid budget American films, and he pays the rent by doing voice overs for ads (O2, Morrisons, National Blood Service).
Not forgetting the fact that he was in Lord of The Rings and Troy.

He does crop up in big budget films from time to time. The 'rings' has already been mentioned and there is also Flightplan with Jodie Foster, which was a recent high profile film. He's also been cast in the movie version of survival horror game 'Silent Hill'. That'll probably be at least a moderately successfull film. I think he's a very good actor and will always be around, either treading water in dodgy straight to video releases, or re-surfacing Sporadically in the showier movies, reminding everyone how he's managed to maintain(if only in an off/on basis) a carreer in the A-list. His career arc reminds me a little of Michael Caine. Caines been around so long that his place in movie history is permanantly earned no matter what he does now, but if you look at his career there are periods where he did nothing but shit and risked decending into obscurity and has-been status.

Have to admit, I didn't like him at first---not because of him or his acting abilities, but about a horribly cynical, publicity-seeking opportunity his ex, Melanie Hill, grabbed with both hands. Not long after Gary Holton's death, Hill (who appeared with him in the second series of Auf Wiedersehen, Pet) was telling some Sunday paper about how his ghost had appeared to her. Two page spread, and a big pic of her and her "actor boyfriend Sean Bean." I know publicity fuels careers, but this stunt was just distasteful.
Bean has proved himself to be a very good actor, while never really getting a real starring role. Anyone who can make whiny, selfish, egotistical Boromir from Lord Of The Rings into a sympathetic character, and make you sorry that he's been killed off so early, has to be good (top marks too in the same line to the lovely Miranda Otto in LOTR in avoiding making Eowyn the pain she was in the book). Haven't seen Troy, but from all accounts Bean's one of the few to come out of it with any credit.
