As a displaced Englishman, USA via France and other places less well known, I am utterly flabbergasted by the controversy here in the US about not calling Christmas, Christmas.
Walmart and other major chains now refer to Christmas as; "The Holiday Season" - thereby not upsetting anyone who doesn't celebrate Christmas.
I'm too dumbfounded to have an opinion about this seeming stupidity, but I am certain I'd find this erudite forums opinions enlightening, as I have on numerous other topics.
Politically correct religeous festival

Re: Politically correct religeous festival
The phrase "Happy Holidays" seems to have been used in the States for some time. But it is rather at odds with the US religious right to be downplaying the Christmas thing so much.
The Pilgrim Fathers on the other hand didn't approve of Christmas festivities.
Sorry if I'm disappointing some forumites by not taking a miserable, Guardian-reading PC stance on this issue.

Thats not PC,just smart marketing
Remember their Big Retailers not Churches or Government Entities
Their in business to make a Profit not spread the gospel
If you held a Poll as to what X-Mas meant what bet you'd get a lot who would say "Its the Holidays"
cheers

Re: Politically correct religeous festival
I'll not risk the original version of this joke but it goes something like :
Teacher..."And what do you do on Christmas Day Johnny?".
"Please Miss, we all go to the shop, look at the empty shelves and sing 'What a friend we have in Jesus' ".
