Computer Problems. Can anyone help?
Computer Problems. Can anyone help?
I am have been having problems with my computer for the last few days or so.
It keeps freezing alot something which it has only done a few times in the last year but does all the time now.
Also it won't switch off as nothing happens when I try that. All my emails in Outlook won't download (that includes my domain and fee ones) and it's generally slow.
I've done the usual virus checks, adware and spybot and defrag it but it's no different.
If it helps then I am running on XP.
Anyone through any light on what's causing it and a possible cure?

Norton eh? Glad its not only me having that problem!!! And that's what I had to do to get my mail working again. Its the Symantes Common Client 3.0.6 that is causing the problem - no word from Symantec yet.
However to get back on topic, it sounds like a driver problem, but I would not rule out memory issues.
You can go here and download memtest, easy to do but may take a while. Other than that, it may very well be a driver issue, and one may have become corrutped, or damaged. Have you tried installing the latest drivers for your hardwares, e.g. Soundcard, video card, etc?

Yes I do run Norton and an update ran the other day whilst I was doing other stuff and Outlook hasn't worked since.
I'll give the system restore a go.
Many Thanks.

Okay I did defrag it once on Friday but I have done it several times this morning and it is quicker now and not freezing anymore so that's much better.
I'll give the the rebooting thing a go this afternoon and see how that works and I'll email you for the clutter thing shortly.
Many thanks for your help which is very much appreciated as is the help from the others as well.
Thanks to you all.

I'll give the metest thing a go. Not sure about the driver issues as that's a bit too advanced for me.

If your going to find an answer it will be found here
Has a searchable knowledge base
another site full of pages of XP tips
In the end I suspect system restore will be your best option
At least then you'll know what the real issue is
cheers
