If there's an attack on Italy, it'll be because of their support for the Iraq war, not against the Vatican (which opposed the war). And the whole dirty bomb thing's a myth from the over-paranoid American imagination. The "damage" from a dirty bomb would be minimal, other than the fear factor.
The "global terrorist threat" is largely made up to get us scared so we support the next war (against Iran probably). It'll work on Americans obviously, but hopefully we Brits are once bitten, twice shy.

This sounds like a variation of a tale I was told- by a reliable work colleague- at the end of September 2001 to the effect of 'don't shop in Birmingham on Saturday- something bad will happen'.
I asked him who had told him. He said a teacher at his kids' primary school [??!!]in Staffs had told his wife. She had been told by a guy who worked in Wolverhampton who drank with her man, et al, et al.
I told my mate this tale in a Black Country pub- and someone across the bar said he had heard it -from a completely different source in the Midlands.
Whatever source you heard it from, the beginning was allegedly an elderly Muslim gentleman falling over/being mugged/dropping his wallet and being helped by someone white- who he then gave the warning to in thanks for the help.
I don't think the 'Muslim gentleman' ever existed. And loads of people would love to know who started the rumour in the first place...

I think that urban myth is worldwide - I heard it in Leeds and i've seen it reported as far away as Sydney

This rumour has been around for ages. Amazing how many people will repeat it without ever questioning it
I always check out the Snopes Urban Legends site when I hear one of these "dead cert" claims
