I put the append below on here a few weeks ago so worth repeating.
Remember that with a DVD (or Video) recorder the TV tuner you use to record is inside the DVD or Video recorder.
This one below has a digital freeview tuner built in rather than an analogue TV tuner.

I bought a "Home Cinema" magazine last November and they reviewed about a dozen DVD recorders (some with hard disk).
The winner was the Panasonic DMRES20D (without hard disk) that was about ?260 at the time.
This has now dropped in price and can be had for about ?170 in Argos etc.
It has no hard disk but does have a digital Freeview box built in.

Yes, they can do, but it depends on what make you get. Out of personal experience, DO NOT get anything that has the Philips name on it ? absolute piece of s*** (I'll never purchase ANYTHING with the Philips name on it again).
If you can afford it, go for one that has an HDD (hard-drive) as well. It saves having to buy loads of DVD disks. You record everything to the HDD, then just burn anything you want to keep onto a disk.
Also, go for one that will use DVD-R and DVD-RWs. If you get a recorder that ONLY uses DVD+R/Ws (like the Philips) you could have problems. No matter what is said, a lot of DVD players and computers still do not recognise DVD+Rs. If it records to DVD-R/W and +R/W more the better though.
Three names that seem to crop up again and again as good makes are Sony, Panasonic and Pioneer.

Anyone who`s owned a playstation or ps2 will tell you that sony can`t make a fucking decent motor or cd laser to save themselves.

I got a pioneer with a 160gb HDD. I'm really pleased with it.
you can store up to 30hours of recordings at the best quality, which is the same as the original source. The lowest quality setting is still better than VHS and give you 120hours, the equivalent of. 40 3 hour video tapes.
you can aslo back up your pld vids by connecting the the VHS, and recording onto the HD, then make a DVD of it.
The best feature for me though is how you can couple it with your sky box or free view, and using the EPG (electronic programe guide) you can record stuff in advance much easier the the awfull timer system on a VCR.
Also, if you have a camcorder you can back stuff up and edit.
I recommend you get one with a HDD.
My Pioneer only records on DVD-R/RW but that has not been a problem.
Now you can get them with 250gb HDD.
