Jews and Isreal.

Now that Israel is going to the Polls again to vote for a new goverment, the B.B.C and various news agencies are again asking Israellis their opinions and expectations etc, has anyone noticed that every one they interviewed has either an Australian or South African or American accent. One of the "So called settlers" in the occupied West Bank even had a Mancunian accent for God's sake.
You could forgive the Muslims for thinking that the West has got it in for them. I know some of their religion leaves a lot to be desired, but I do think that Israel really should start to think seriously about a just and fair peace with the Arabs and vice versa.
Golda Meir did'nt do the Jewish nation any favours by saying and I quote "There is no such thing as a Palestinian People"
Did'nt naughty ol' Adolf have similar ideas about the Jewish people...

Hi Stripey,

Hitler focused resentment felt by the German people onto the Jews. When he was a struggling painter Hitler observed that there were many rich Jews in the art world and that they got the girls, the prizes and recognition that he so much craved. He started off the NSADP and as an orator stirred up the mob against them and also offered work to those in the NSADP union. He was voted into office on a racist ticket.

When he gained power he systematically robbed the Jews of their money and property and sent them off to work camps where every SS officer used them as slaves to earn lots of more cash.

I cant see the analogy that you make.

That is a very good summary of history, Mike. I would add that Hitler also transferred most of the blame for Germany's defeat in 1918 onto the Jews. There were millions of people very respetive to Hitler's message in the 20' & 30's and not only in Germany.

If Hitler had not persecuted the Jews and make them want their own homeland they would not have alienated the Palestinians as they have. Now the war on terror is the result. Its Muslims v the Jews aka the rest of the world..sad but true I'm afraid.

I know that this is a very emotive subject and everybody is entitled to their views, but the British Goverment at the time of Israel's founding, when the United Nations Security Council voted for the Jewish state's right to exist in 1948, the British goverment was the only one to vote against; probably because they knew the amount of shit that was going to go down in the future and we're still living with the effects now.
I'm not anti-semitic either, before anyone asks I used to have a Jewish girlfriend, and other girls of faith, colour, religion, etc.
I just think that the Jewish state is going have to bite the bullet and come to a right and proper agreement with the Palistinians and the muslim world. One of things that "Ol Tony Blair" did right was the peace agreement between the various factions in Northern Ireland, it's not perfect but it's better than killing each other, God bless Mo Mollem.

Don't think your correct on that stripeysidney.
The earliest Security Council vote on Israel I can find is 1949 when it voted on admitting Israel to the UN. There were 2 abstentions (not the UK) and no votes against.
I think you might be talking about the various discussions, reports etc. prior to that on the future of Palestine which was a British mandate.

I agree: the treatment of Palestinians by Israel has been barbaric and unforgivable. The initial founding of the state drive 750,000 Palestinians from their homes, and later expansion into the West Bank and Gaza drove away many more.

Unfortunately, Israel is a useful ally for the US and British interests in the Middle East, so Western commentators stay quiet about the extent of the Palestinians' treatment.

Making an analogy between Israel and Nazi Germany isn't useful though - two very different situations; but it's ironic that the Jews fleeing Europe later became the world's worst persecutors of another race.

Today, Israel is a deeply racist country and many Israelis consider Arabs to be sub-human. As a Jew I can't bring myself to visit the country (I've turned down an invitation to a relative's wedding in Jerusalem).

I very much agree with the views you express. It is not useful to compare Israel with the Third Reich but from an historical perspective I think it is important to remember that it was the various pogroms in Europe, and in particular the worst one, the final solution, that made the surviving European jews so determine to have their own homeland. Without doubt, had Hitler not attempted to exterminate European jewry between 1941 & 1945 there would have been far less world sympathy for the Jews and they would not have been able to take over Palesstine.
