Yes you are right - it is, very much so. But then again it depends on what you want to discuss - what is important to you, may not be important to other people as they are different. Seems to me that most people are so bedraggled with modern life thee days, that they simply cant be arsed to enter heavy discussions. Some people want to come home from work, sit in front of the box, eat their tea, laugh, fart and go to sleep. 9-5. Micro meals. Pay the bills. Have a beer at the weekend. Get their pay. Middle of the road. Thats enough for some people, for others (myself included) its not. Thats fine with me though - each to their own.

The media is full of superficiality for sure! These days unfortunately celebs, sport stars and chat show hosts are worshipped by most, mainly the younger generation. Christ look at wayne rooney, what a talent, but lets be frank he has a face like a smacked arse and has ben caught knobbing an old scouse brass! Not much of a role model is he! Personally i have many varied interests that i think are meaningful and constructive, but i also hold my hands up to partaking in watching utter drivel such as footballers wives, the apprentice and other mindless crap that entertain me - i wonder what that makes me?!

for me personally the only time i see people having meaningful and constructive communication is when they are off their faces round a friends house 3am sunday morning - i find it realy sad that people have to have litres of booze and a gram of coke before they can say what they really think about one another!

Well, that depends on your circle of friends- we can readily revert from the smalltalk to the deep and meaningful; we're good that way. Time, place annd appropriateness are also important- there isn't much scope in today's society for a deep, constructive chat in a lively pub or a nightclub! Then again, nightclubs are only conducive to sign language.

You are correct though- the media and popular culture is full of trivial mawkish cack: but they are playing to the masses. Symptomatic of an apathetic chav culture? Partly, IMO.

In the pubs years ago when juke boxes first came about they always said music kills the art of conversation, maybe the olduns were right you get music blasted in your ears everywhere you go these days!love!

You live in the culture you want to. You can buy Nuts, watch Big Brother and drink WKD if you want.
You can read Proust, discuss Socrates and spend your weekends rock-climbing if you want.

A lot of culture is good for the soul. eg. A good book that makes you think.
A lot of popular culture today is shallow, superficial and soul-eroding.
Fast food for the soul.
