Where next with DVDs?

Have we gone as far as we can with 'Adult Content' on DVD or is there some way to take it to the next level?

As a film maker and producer now also working in the adult broadcast industry as a director/producer, I'm curious to know how others think the boundaries can be pushed...

The obvious next step is of course HD; I mean proper HD (not HDV). That will become realistic when 'real' HD delivery into viewers homes becomes a reality fairly soon.

But what's missing in the industry? Interactive DVD? Adult Games/Porn interaction? Subtitles?

Much of my previous work has been in designing kiosk and gambling machine software and the hardware/software interaction and transaction processing on worldwide networks. So one thing I realise IS possible is the development of an on-line system that interfaces to 'hardware' based on complex sensor arrays and feedback hydraulics or similar. Meaning extremely sensitive male and female interfaces (with perhaps over 100 sensors/transmitters in the array) could be developed... Imagine someone gripping a phallus in New Zealand and the male recipient experiencing the same grip in London!

Is this worth pursuing? Imagine a DVD or game that really could get your rocks off! Or perhaps direct peer-to-peer interaction as described above.

I know people have dabbled with 'cyber sexual stimuli' etc. in the past, but I'm interested to see what others in the industry think and what comments you might have.

Well we have had DVD, DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-RW, DVD+RW, DVD-ROM, DVD-RAM, HD-DVD, Blu-Ray DVD, DVD Audio, single layer, dual layer, flippers, superbit, 12cm, 8cm......

So there can't be much left to try.

You're talking about teledildonics, Chrome....I think they tried it out with full body suits, but it was a bit cumbersome.

As for where DVD's can go....do they need to? Content is king, so higher quality content is the 'final frontier' for me. Producers need to ask how good can it get, and how good can we make it?

Creativity and ideas outweigh most technological advancements...most people would rather watch Star Wars on VHS than watch The Phantom Menace on HD-DVD, if you get where I'm coming from...

"teledildonics" - Wow Dan, right... yes that's what I mean (definately NOT the all over suit)... dildos with built in sensors and a male 'receptor' sleeve affair as well would be more like what I had in mind... Hmmm. Think more like on-line 3D gaming where you could meet characters and get it on with them... I would think knowing the sensations you were feeling were from someone elses hand/pussy/ass/cock whatever would be a fairly good way of having 'real' cybersex. Combine it with a chat/voice system and this might be a great way for couples to 'keep in touch' when away from each other, not to mention safe way of being extremely promiscuous and having a bit of fun... lets face it it would be the safest 'Safe Sex' that there is!!

I would always of course agree content is king when it comes to DVD's though :) so as you say higher-quality is the real goal, both in vision and audio. I would also be the first to agree with the sentiment that great ideas and creative treatment such as good lighting and excellent filming certainly outweigh the techniology; So we definately agree... :)

It's bad enough when your mum finds your jazz mags. No way am I hiding a teledildonics suit under the bed.

I have worked on features and I'm shooting one this summer as DP, so this is also something I have been wondering... Is there 'really' a place for a 'proper' story in porn? or is it really just all about the 'adult action' and the story really does not matter to most? Let's face it we all know what they're good for... :)

I'm not suggesting re-making 'Confessions of a...' or 'Mary Millington style' films, but what Keith is suggesting is perhaps more akin to an R18 'Emanuel style' film. Or is there a place for say something like an R18 version of 'Lost' perhaps?

I have to agree content is key and not advances in technology.

The should there be a story or should it just be shagging has been exhausted on lots of other threads and opinion will always be divided.

I'll always vote story but then I was brought up pre-internet porn, which in most cases seems to be more 'time orientated'.

My personal opinion about the way forward is to go backward and get the soft we have to see because of ofcom etc turned into a more acceptable hard core version.

Unfortunately for that to happen the industry will have to make big changes and in my opinion it isn't capable of doing it.
