I notice in Switzerland, the liberal stance on using heroin has caused a drop in usage, I have often wondered if we adopted a more liberal stance on A class drugs, would we rid the streets of crime and all the misery that goes with this habit. I personally think we would, sure there would be a lot more addicts initially, but most of these are doing it anyway, your average Joe either takes drugs or they dont.

If you want to increase the amount of HIV/Hepatitis then go ahead and allow more liberal use of drugs. Also lets really feed the criminal underground and let gun law rule our estates when the Russian and East Euro gangs go head to head with Yardies and local low life. 30 years ago when heroin could be legally prescribed there were 500 heroin addicts in the country. After 30 years of draconian prohibition there are 500,000. It's the prohibitionists who are fucking this country up.

Why? Do you think they'll drop dead if they do? People take drugs because they make them feel good, the same reason people drink. Anything done to excess will ruin your health, whether it is booze, drugs or cream cakes.

Prohibition just puts all the money into the hands of gangsters, and means that a multi billion dollar business is controlled by the most violent men on the planet. This may make sense to you, I think it may be just a little misguided.

Strange how prohibitionists darn't say anything about alcohol but still think they're silly arguments apply to other drugs.

Prohibition of alcohol made the mafia back in the thirties, just like prohibition of drugs has all the other crime syndicates. We need to legalise the whole bag of mashings as soon as possible and get some common sense into the argument.

Legalising drugs would - as said above - wipe out a huge amount of organised and violent crime almost overnight. Also (and just as importantly) it would put a lot of kids off trying drugs in the first place, thus drastically cutting demand. Because once it's legal and "allowed" it's far, far less "cool" - because as we all know, there's attraction in the forbidden, especially when you're an impressionable teenager under "peer pressure".

Trouble is, no government would ever dare legalise hard drugs because then they'd be "seen to be condoning their use" (shock, horror!!).

Utter bollocks of course, but that's the way it works. Never mind common sense.

And what are the organised gangster/criminal fraternity supposed to do after this then? A number of flakey, part-timers might wise up sure, but large numbers would probably move on to some other crime, if necessary.

You sure? Children strangers to cigarettes and alcohol are they?

And as with cigarettes and alcohol, there would still be a large black market for any drug made legal.

I don't really care what the criminals would get up to. What I find absurd is that you make illegal various substances which grow in the third world for a few hundred quid a kilo, which the criminals end up selling in the west for forty thousand quid a kilo. If you think enabling criminal syndicates to amass wealth on an almost unimaginable scale is a good idea, then you are welcome to your opinion, but I don't share it.

Trying to stop people doing what they want to do, and which gives them pleasure, is a waste of time. The state tried it for years with porn, now they finally seem to be giving up. Until the 80's much of the porn industry in the USA was controlled by the mob, precisely because it was illegal. Who else was going to control it? In the same way, the mob controls gambling in most US states, again because they keep it illegal. In the UK gambling is legal and controlled, and the mob don't own the action. I'd much rather proper pharmaceutical companies distributed drugs in the UK. Our pension funds might even buy shares in them, and we might be able to afford to retire, no thanks to Gordon Brown!
