This just occurred to me. If the sea levels rise 10 to 20 feet in the next century, many of the "blue" Democrat states will be part-drowned and most of the "red" Republican states inland will be unaffected.

Are the Republican trying to wipe New York and LA off the map like they did their best to let New Orleans die?

Ya know you might be one to something there because most of the New Orleanians were black and they don't want to rebuild that area that they came from since it was in the danger zone to be flooded again.

It's been a while since I was at school, but I was always taught that a given frozen volume of water always took up more space than the same given volume of liquid, hence why you get burst pipes.

So if all these melting Ice Sheets and Icebergs are going to melt, the added volume of water is going to be what is above the waterline minus a bit for the shrink in volume of the bit under-water. In other words 1 pint of frozen water takes up more volume than 1 pint liquid water.

So it's the volume of ice above the water line we need to worry about and not what's in it?


Does that make sense? It's late Saturday evening and there doesn't look to be much absolut left....

I'm a bit pissed and bored, so allow me a few mistakes....

There's enough ice -apparently- to raise the oceons by 30ft, if all the ice melts at the arctic. (not inc antarctic). London, New York, Santa Monica, Malabu, whole of Holland, most of Washington, most of Florida, etc etc etc will be underwater if this happens.

Not only that but the atlantic currents that bring warm air/water north will shift westwards, and europe will exist under ice sheets (again). It may even stop lots of Africa getting the yearly floods making the whole continent a desert (like the Sahara).

I'm not 'clued up' on what effects this will cause weather in the mediteranian & eastern europe, but it doesn't look good.

I've not googled for any info so I don't know the latest 'facts', I'm just posting what I remember from college & a few books I've read.....


Whatever, we should do more than we are right now, and it's a much more important subject than Labours latest spin doctoring, or Big Brothers latest eviction!

Why! couldn't get LAID!!laugh! No you don't sound pissed or bored but I'm the chairman!!laugh! Seriously though you have a point there because I would think there would be a lot of ice up there but also I keep hearing our great lakes (Lake Michigan, Superior, Huron, Ontario and Erie) is actualy a few inches under sea level maybe as of one or two years ago.

I will have a look at some research though just to satisfy my curiosity, you may well be correct and I was talking complete arse but that's the danger of 'pissed posting'...lol!

You were basically right Jacques. Only land-based ice will make any significant difference to the sea levels. Unfortunately there quite a lot of it.

I admire your approach as a philosopher though - vodka is a fine thought-enabling substance. I recommend Absinthe though as the thinking man's drink of choice.
