is airport security really good?

I recently heard that a major concern is mounting regarding a suicide type airline passenger........... not the sort you have seen in the films.....running to the loo with his brief case........or trying to light his shoe.............no.......far more basic than that........
I won't go into details but I am sure alot of you guys will know straight the way.
