I've had the same problem myself.
I don't bother buying steak anymore it always ends up like leather, even if it's carefully cooked.

supermarket steak is shite, poor cattle and not hung properly
best thing to do is find a good farm shop, or there are some good online shops which sell mail order overnight but can be pricey

Why complain only about steak... most supermarket food is poor.
Tescos, Sainsburys etc., have decreed to growers that, for example, carrots must be a certain size, colour and shape... fuck what they taste like, so long as they *look* good on the shelves. The great buying public demands ever cheaper food... well the payback is that it now tastes of nothing!
Go back 30/40 years ago... not that long ago really... and food was certainly more expensive than it is now; but it was tastier too! And we didn't waste it as we do now. There are few traditional butchers in the high street, having been driven out by the superstores, so what's happened to all the pigs heads and trotters, tripe, oxtails etc.?
Instead of providing good, tasty, nutritional meals, these cuts are used either for feeding our pets (another strange British obsession) or are ground into a tasteless mush to which are added large quantities of salt, chemicals and "flavour enhancers" and sold as ready-meals and burgers.
Things aren't much better for those of us who are vegetarians, either! Tasteless, watery tomatoes, cucumbers, courgettes, etc.
If I see food labeled with the "Tractor Mark" I don't think "great British quality" (which is what they want you to think)... I think TASTELESS SHITE!!!

I kind of agree with you on some points but I don't think our food tastes any 'blander' than before.
It's well known that the British palete has gotten used to spicier, and more flavoursome foods over the last 20 years, with the influx of foreign restaurants & take aways.
Traditional British food now tastes like it did to all tourists years ago......shite.
I think our taste buds have a broader spectrum of tastes these days, and when it comes to flavour, British food is pretty bland compared to other food in the world.
Being in LA a lot I must stick up for certain foods purchased here. U.S chicken breasts taste like water, and if you like 'meaty' bacon don't even concider american bacon. It's just all fat & salt. Their chocolate is horrid, and bread is sweeter then over here. I don't like sugary bread! Errrghh!
On the plus side, their shrimp (prawns here) have a stronger taste, which I like, and their beef & icecreams are way better.

I never buy steak from the supermarket. It's rubbish.
We've got a local butcher that has been a family business for over 100 years and he has superb mature Aberdeen Angus steak that you could cut with a fork it's so tender.

Supermarket tomatoes don't taste of anything these days... they've been forced in greenhouses so that they reach a certain size and colour within a specified number of weeks from when they were first planted. Sadly, though, they havn't been allowed to ripen naturally. Natural ripening is one of the things that gives flavour/taste to fruit and veg.
The same can be said for most fruit and veg sold in British supermarkets, even the "organic" ranges.
Most animals bred for slaughter are pumped full of water and growth hormones to make them bigger faster, that's why they don't have much taste and shrivel to nothing in the pan.
Why does bacon sizzle? Here's something you can try at home. Heat a frying pan with a little bit of oil. When hot, add a couple of drops of water. Sound familliar?

I've had some lovely steak from Sainsburys and I've had some tough old stuff from there as well. The local butchers are all gone so cannot get the mature stuff locally, in the good old days when there were a few butchers about, no-one I knew could afford to buy steak, they sold more mince and scrag end than anything else.
Bought a pack of steak off the supplier quoted earlier at Xmas and didn't find it anything special.
It's nice to think about fresh veg. and mature meat etc but if everyone decided they wanted it, no-one could supply it so we are stuck with the supermarkets.

Totally agree about the sizzling bacon. Can't comment on tomatoes Bob; I fucking hate the things!
