There was a fair bit of nudity, and some casual sadism/horror. Not what we expected from Auntie Beeb in the mid-1970s. It did have a fairly high nymphomania count (Julia, Livilla, Messalina, Agrippinilla) and some of the wickedest people in history.

And Brian Blessed and I think Patrick Stewart too.

Worth watching anyway---but great fun seeing folk like Patrick Stewart (in wig), John Rhys-Davies and Bernard Hill long before Middle-earth, George Baker, David Robb, Ian Ogilvy, Bernard Hepton, John Castle, John Hurt, Stratford Johns and even Nursie from Blackadder II.

Oh, and Brian Blessed proving he can act as well as bluster.

At one point it aired in the states and I saw it in its entirety. I don't remember how much skin was shown or not shown, but nothing stands out particularly in my mind. Perhaps our broadcast standards were different from the UK version, so not sure if there is some original directors cut which may be offered to you.

I can say that with or without a peepshow it is well worth a viewing. The literary quality is inspired by a book of the same title. The intricate and intense interaction among the players, the plots, subplots, conspiracies and revenge are quite engaging and consistently brings one back for more.

The other big thing to recommend it is that my girlfriend, who resided with me at the time, was completely fascinated with it. Kick in a box of chocolates and you're in dude!
