I've heard of this group but don't know their music.I have a chance to buy "What We Did On Our Holidays" for 5 bucks at an import/salvage shop. Any advice/ recs?? There about 400 other albums I could choose instead.

Go for it. They are the group that "invented" folk-rock. Lead Guitarist Richard Thompson is excellent- way back when I saw him hold his own in a Jam session with Jimi Hendrix. They got together in a house called Fairport in N.London hence the name. They developed an audience in a club called the UFO which also spawned Plnk Floyd and Arthur Brown. Sixties Grerats.

I don't own this album but, being Fairport it can't be all that bad I'm sure. My personal recommendation would have to be 'Leige and Lief', seriously, you won't regret it.

Slightly belated in my opinion, in February 2006 it won the Most Influential Folk Album of All Time at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards.

See if you can resist the sweet voice of the sadly departed Sandy Denny.

Steve56, You can find 'Genesis Hall' on the album 'Unhalfbricking' as well as the track 'Si Tu Dois Partir' that you mentioned earlier.

You can get an idea of what the tracks from the albums are like by entering Fairport Convention in the search, 30 second samples are usually available.

Further information can be found here.
