Claire Short - Question Time

Tonight on the BBC....
"I hate porn. If you look at the top ten richest men in Britain, four or five of them made large amounts of money through porn. That's a horrible reflection the extent of it's consumption in this country."
Consenting adults, pouring more wealth into the country and providing a pleasurable product for, erm, consenting adults.
Sometimes my optismism is quashed.

shame - i quite like claire short but she did once try to pass a bill outlawing page 3, iirc.
thought she'd have grown out of knee jerk "wimmins" politicking, by now.

That's, statistically, bollocks.
I'm quite fond of Claire, beacause she does at least have principles, a rare thing nowdays, but:
1) have you noticed how the ther anti-porn brigade all have faces like a bulldog chewing a wasp? No jealousy, surely.....;
2) a girl with no other obvious/marketable talent could buy her terminally-ill mother a comfortable place in a nursing home just by stripping off for an afternoon: harmless to her, AFAICT, and an option that Claire and Co. seem to have robbed the rest of us poor, ugly bastards of, even tho' we've been contributing to for all of our working lives.
So much for 'solidarity', CB. And as for "sisterhood", stop patronising the rest of your gender. You are NOT the only British female with brains.
Some of them actually use them, even.

Tiresome political nonsense, the whole thing (Question Time). All this intellectual oneupman-ship, and a load of racist overtones from those shouting about 'illegal immigrant scroungers" - anyone who watched it surely must have been as repulsed as I was by the fat woman in black who sat in her seat shouting "we don't want all this, we just want the world sorted out". She'd be the last one to sell the tacky jewelery she was wearing to help those who are fleeing to our country out a bit.
Christ, sometimes I'm so thankful to be getting away from attitudes in this country. Buttsie, it can't be this bad down under, surely.
And as for Claire Short, it is worrying that government policy might being influenced by such ambiguous and innacurate moral bandwagon-ing. She may well think she is protecting those from the 'dark threat' of abuse and exploitation of women, and I respect her views as I agree she does have principles - I think she has the best for most people at heart. However, I don't think she's done enough research to warrant her opinion, and I would prefer to see all non-informed opinions being excluded from politics altogether.
Surely the government is there to serve the people. If pornography is being consumed at such a rate, it will take more then a few people saying "I hate it" to stop any change.
Ho hum.

I was warming to Claire, particularly as she spoke up for cannabis smokers and was begging to think she might have grown out of all that 1970's college/uni 'wimmin's' issue crap, not to mention all that tiresome third world shite. Obviously not. But it's interesting that someone can be intelligent, but at the same time have odd ideas about reality and the world in general. It is self evident that sex was not invented by men to oppress 'wimmin' - indeed lots of 'wimmin' actively enjoy sex and seek it out. So, why does Claire and those similarly inclined lower middleclass public sector types still cling to this absurdity? And why are those Guaurdian readers such miserable twats?
Dibble.

With respect to previous post/opinions. My own little input would consist of these very simple FACTS:
Per capita we are the highest buyers of porn in Europe.
We have (per capita) the highest incidence of sex related crime).
Politicians say any dam thing they are advised to by their "spin doctors" in order to (a) make a mark (b) be re-elected) (c( cause they are damn losers and feel they have to say SOMETHING that Pary Whips don't give a fuck about.
Porn is fair game and all the comment/rhetoric in the world is never going to change the status quo in this wonderful democracy we are convinced we live in: Convinced by fools and liars I mean, in the name of politics.

Claire Short certainly went down in my estimations this evening. I have admired the work she has done on International development (i study Population Studies at University) but to talk about porn in this way is ridiculous and just shows how out of touch the present goverment is with the interests of the people it is supposed to represent. Porn is a harmless product, enjoyed by many more people than the government is willing to believe, and I think it is high time that it stood up and realised how disjointed its views especially when compared with its European counterparts. Does porn create serious social problems in Holland, Germany etc?........I think not!

Not disputing them at all, but where are you getting your figures from regards your first and second points?
Oh, good bit of news I forgot to mention - I got my research project officially approved today. Working title "A philosophical investigation of the moral issues in pornography". Tackling: Philosophical concepts involved in pornography (harm, tolerance etc); censorship and state involvement; porn consumption and production; freedom. Got to be 12,000 words long and submitted in just under two years time. Got to have a running argument which will be pro-porn and pro-freedom. Probably not of interest to anybody, but I'm quite pleased.
