The last few years, I've been toying with the idea of a bit of travelling before I get tied down with kids and stuff, and have decided if i do it I'm gonna go all out and buy one of those round the world tickets (RTW)

Now I couldnt belive how cheap they work out, approx ?1300 all in, for the route I wanna do (BANGKOK to SYDNEY to AUCkLAND to FIJI to LA to VANCOUVER/NYC/MIAMI....haven't decided on the final leg yet) All of these will be over the space of approx 8-9 months, probably starting early next year with the longest legs in Oz & NZ.

I wanna know if anyone on here's done anything like this before.

I've got a couple of grand put aside (after ticket purchase) but will need a bit more, something I'm considering raising by remortgaging my house, as i bought JUST before the houseprice boom, I can also probably rent it out to a mate while I'm away, but this will result in a quite tight budget.

or

I could just really bite the bullet, and sell up, stick15k in a high interest account to save for a deposit when i get back, and have a lot more fun while I'm away.

Now, I don't mind slumming it when I'm away, in hostels etc. but on the other hand, if I was in LA, I'd love to have a few days in Vegas while I'm over "that way."

So, firstly, has anyone done this?? And secondly, whats the best way to fund it.

I suggest go do it! Although I live in the states I had the pleasure of traveling the states as a job (long haul truck driver) and had fun doing it, I wish and still hope to travel outside the states (not counting Canada although I have been there and liked it).

I dig what you're saying, Keith. But you might also add 'pretentious' and 'naive' to that damming analysis.

I despise those gap year tossers as well ? irritating, pretentious, knob heads. They always seem to be going to godforsaken places, like darkest Um-Bongo Land, to work with the Huba-Huba tribe and help them set up jungle drop-in centres for native lesbians and oppressed ?wimmin?. Set of twats. Why can?t they go to Tenerife or Faleraki to drink some lager and shag some lairy tattooed chav birds? Do they think they?re too good for that? Are they lookin? down their noses at us proles and our vacuous, uncouth, non-middleclass, non-pretentious pleasures? Ha!

Hey, and what about when they get captured by the local rebels, guerrillas or freedom fighters, etc? Then they start crying for their mummsy and the British consul, embarrassing our government, creating a frigging international incident. Why can?t they stay at home and mind their own privileged business, hey?..Anyhow, t? fuck wiv ?em! Let the rebels teach ?em a lesson I say.
