Hardcore Porn at the Royal Academy

The old farts, trustees at the Royal Academy are trying to stop the public seeing the Saatchi show because they are saying that it is pornographic. They are demanding an "adults only room." One of the paintings depicts "oral sex" they thunder!

I wonder if any of these anti-porn campaigners have ever read the History of Art? Past Masters accused of making pornography include Salvador Dali,Picasso,Rodin and recently Jeff Koons. There are many others who do not spring to mind at the moment.

Can porn ever be art ? What do you think?

Well have a look at this:

Sleeping Venus, c. 1510, by Giorgione (Giorgio Barbarelli)

Reclining artistic nude or Venus having a fiddle with her ladycrinckle? Wonder if the RA would approve of this or not?

Pornography is subjective not objective.

Mike the day porn is accepted in mainstream society we might as well put up a going out of business sign.

I think people prefer to keep it as a dark secret on the hard drive or under the bed. Yeah people are becoming more honest and theres a certain chic about it now but the day art world accepts it as art is definitely the day us pornogrpahers are out of business.

if it becomes too acceptable i can imagine big companies like Coca Cola having some celebrity sucking on a cock with a can of coke in her hand and all those perfume adverts will be 30 second wanathons!:

Shit the Eva Longoria advert is on (tug tug tug).....Aaaaaah!...Oh shit now Claudia Schiffer!!!!

The danger if that ever happens is a nation of men constantly looking tired...hey Hollywood! Someone should make a movie about this...And get Eva Longoria in it!

Hi Jaques,
The painting is beautiful and she is obvious masturbating. I bet Giorgione created a stir with this piece.
Thanks.
Mike.

One eyed Jack,

Art will always be around especially the erotic. Art for art's sake.

Art is something you hang on your wall or display on your mantelpiece (and even talk to your friends about) !!! -

Art can be pornographic but porn will never be art.

Al,

Jeff Koons would disagree with you there. I wonder how many people have got a dead shark on the wall!

Al,
Yes I love decorative art, the kind you hang on the wall. Conversation pieces...even though "decorative" is a dirty word on the the contemporary art scene. Sir Nicolas Serota at the Tate would not been seen dead buying a decorative piece and instead chooses to spend millions on worthless rubbish like "found objects" : so called conceptual art. Even Chris Ofili, who is a good painter, had to add some elephant dung to his paintings to make them acceptable.

Mike,

You raise a good point. Modern art is like porn in that its always striving for something that bit different. In that respect it's lost its way too!

Al,

I sell a painting now and again and have earnt my living by making images all my life. Art is a business and people buy pieces for investment. I hope that contemporary investors lose a lot of money in the future by buying the so called modern art that is on the market today. A dirty bed is a dirty bed and can never be art by the context of viewing in an art gallery! Tracy Emin is a talentless alcohol junkie whose pathetic attempts at drawing show everyone the corruption that exists in the artworld. Artists have always been difficult to control and it suits the corrupt that anything can be viewed as art, even a light bulb going on and off for example!

Conceptualism is based on the false philosophical premise that it is the idea that is art and not the actual art object per se. However ideas are two penny and remain just that until the artist gives birth to them by the act of creation. The art object,or image, must be the child of the artist.
