Moderated Chats

I quite liked Jays idea of a Chat Room for the BGAFD,
but don't consider it a subsitute for the forum.

Every web-site, porn or non-porn, where I have seen
it done well has adopted an interview format
where they have:

a) Time constrained access (chat is not always 'up')
b) Agreed a schedule of people to give interviews
at specific times.
c) Got a moderator who will filter questions
through to the interviewee. The interviewee
is kept in a different 'room' from the public,
shielding them from abuse/stupidity/repetitive
questioning.
c) Posted a transcript of questions & responses
afterwords, forming part of the site content.

That format could potentially be made to work here and
I might be willing to devote time to assisting the
process, with the approval of the site owners,
recognising that they have enough to do. There is no
point is doing so without their consent, as that is
likely to fracture the community.

The questions I have are:

Would forum members be interested in participating
in moderated chats at set times? Are there enough
questions out there dying to be asked ? Would we
get people attending ?

Would those in the industry (producers & stars) be
prepared to participate, on a purely altruistic
basis, by sitting in front of a computer for an
hour, of an evening, occasionally ?

Can such a service be set up on existing Chat servers,
essentially for free ?

If it can be done reliably without a big increase in
the workload of the site owners, would they give
their approval ?

Whats the point? The forum provides the facility to ask questions already. I cant see a chat room providing anything extra.

This is exactly the sort of opinion I am trying to solicit,
but since I am advocating 'Chats' I should probably talk
about potential advantages.

1) The immediacy of net-chats allows easier follow-up
questions and easier clarification. It's more akin
to a conversation than a mail based forum.
2) Similarly, feedback can be obtained more quickly.
For instance marcusallens straw poll on 'which do
you prefer' could get responses in 5 minutes,
instead of about a day
3) The 'chat' is not free-ranging, as the forum, the
topic is focused on the person being interviewed,
the attendees, by their attendance, will be focused
on one topic.
4) Industry people who do not participate in the forum
may be interested in participating in chats because
they are constricted to a particular time and the
focus is very much on them. I say *may* - comments
are welcomed from the industry bods.

As I said, I don't see chats as an alternative to
the forum, which is pretty powerful, but it could be
a useful supplement.

All thats IMHO, more posts so I can see what
others think ?

and then he could post the question on the forum for the people who were not in the chat.

i dont know if anyone knows much about mIrc (i know a 'tiny' amout) but the moderators can set up a 'bot' to admin the room while they are not about (although not as effectivly)

this is free to use, i think it would be a good idea if a few of the people who vist this site arranged a time to set up a room and had a kind of test to see if it would work. it wouldnt hurt to just give it a try to find out weather its decided to be used or not.

Yeah but we all log on at different times. Some of us work late and others work shifts. For example myself and JJ normally work hours which coincide with him coming in as I go to bed. Recently we both got the same week off on holiday and look what happened. We both got pissed and have been slagged off by various tossers ever since.

In a nutshell its a shite idea.

more people than just you that come to this web site!!

i know various people work different hours but if everyone worked the same hours and logged on at the same time it would cause a server meltdown!!

as i said before, the use of a bot (using mIrc) can have the chat moderated without the use of a human admin, therefore leaving it open all the time, plus if you and JJ on your holiday on the net had used a chat room for your drunken journey you wouldn't have been "slagged off by various tossers".

love it or hate it but dont slate it!

I personally like the current forum because it gives you a raft of topics too pic from at your own leisure. As Magoo has pointed out there is the time factor too consider not to mention you have to behave youselves.A chat room is far too confined but thats just my personal opinion.

cheers
