Bit random this but all ways wondered and cant find the answer any where. In a bridge too far when James Caan saves the life of his friend Capt Glass who has been shot in the head. Did this actually happen?

According to screen writer William Goldman, yes it did. And Goldman said that the three best stories from the book the film was based on were impossible to fit into his screenplay.

Bloody good film---and what a cast.

Decent film, apparantly on buget and on schedule, to Dickie's credit, but I think actor-wise they may have gone a star too far.

I recall seeing, many years ago, a dramatised recreation of Market Garden, which was shot in Arnham in 1945/6, and featured a lot of the paras who survived. I cant remember the name of the film but it was a very moving testament to the bravery of the troops involved.

I first heard about Arnhem courtesy of that valuable aid to the young mind World Of Wonder (Look And Learn), which contained articles on all sorts of things from history and art to science and geography. I must have been about ten, but the illustration with the article (parachuting troops being shot at from the ground) stayed with me. Another fine example of top brass screwing up.

Wish I had seen that documentary, Andy.

It wasn't as I recall, a documentary, more a dramatised re-creation.

Thanx chap!! Like I say just all ways wondered. God it is a great film. My fave bit has got to be where the German comes over the bridge to "Discuss terms of surrender" And he is told "Sorry we dont have the facilites to accommodate,you all" Cue one very confussed looking German!!

Indeed a lot of the men involved in filming were Market Garden survivors:

Richard Todd, born Richard Andrew Palethorpe-Todd in Dublin, Ireland in 1919.
Upon leaving school, Todd trained for a potential military career at Sandhurst before inaugurating his acting training at the Italia Conta school, then spent six years' service in World War II, first as an officer in the Yorkshire Light Infantry, then as a paratrooper with the the 7th Battalion (LI) The Parachute Regiment. Todd served with distinction and on D-Day this Battalion made contact with Major Howard at the Orne Bridge now called Pegasus Bridge. Todd was the officer who made contact.
In the Darryl F. Zanuck's D-Day recreation The Longest Day (1962) he played Major Howard and the meeting with Todd was one scene.
In D Day The 6th of June (1956) he played the commander of his Battalion in the filming of the same scene.
