The most used and widely supported are:
phpBB
SMF
VBulletin
Phorum as used by BGAFD (but an older version)
However Vanilla is gaining in popularity and probably is the most extensible.
For any free software a visit to Sourceforge http://sourceforge.net should be your first port of call.
