What is the general consensus off British people towards Americans in the UK right now ? For example if an american travels to england is he/she ,general met with hostility by British people/persons ?
Is an American accent enough to cause an abusive outburst from a brit ?
Do British people hate Americans because of the war in iraq and bush etc.
I know it's an odd question but please go with me on this. I have an American friend who wants to visit england but has heard that British people are pretty anti-American these days and that it could be dangerous.
How does the general population feel about Americans in the UK at present and act if they come across one ?

I can't see why someone would be hostile to someone just because of their nationality. Bush is a prick, but most Americans feel the same about him anyway unless they're a church-going, Texan oil baron.
I'd say Britain is the 'safest' place for an American outside the USA........depending where he/she goes.

There may be certain sectors within the British community who feel hostile against Americans but im sure they are in a minority and most Brits welcome the Yanks coming over and consider them to be our closest allies, more so than some of our EEC partners.

It's the Bush Administration that is the problem not ordinary citizens. We might stereotype them a bit mind....
But they will be fine apart from the odd comment from idiots, unless of course he/she goes into certain communities in which case they may need to turn on thier 'Modar' (Mohammed Radar).
Don't believe the bullshit, there is no general concensus of hostility.

ok i fancy putting my two penneth in.
my friend is married to an american and lives there too. so i've had a bit of interaction with americans over the years. on the whole i found them to be kind, respectful, warm and nice.
sure they may be a bit loud or ott and maybe a bit arrogant at times but thats just the way they are. us brits are probably just as bad but in different ways, any culture/race for that matter.
so i dont see why anybody should give them a tough time here.
Bush, on the other hand is a cunt!!

Re Bush: I live in a state where George's brother was a very popular two-term governor, & in a conservative area of the state. Nonetheless, how much they despise W. is a frequent topic of conversation amongst the common folk. We'd rather have Nixon, who at least had a basic idea of what democratic, constitutional government is all about!!

The only real hostility towards America and American's comes from a set of privileged, pretentious, university educated, middleclass knob heads amongst whom it has always been fashionable and trendy to slag off America. The majority of British people are fine with Americans (or at least indifferent). The only reasons you may be under the impression of a general antipathy to our colonial cousins is that said middleclass knob heads make all the TV programs and write almost all of the articles in newspapers and magazines. It is simply their incessant voices and views that assail your eyes and ears every day of the week, and not Joe Ordinary's, These Anti-American middleclass people only represent one part of one section of our society. They have the loudest voices. But they certainly do not speak for Britain as a whole.
So, tell your American friend it will be fine. Just avoid any poncy middleclass areas and institutions. For instance, accepting an invite to an Islington dinner party would be just asking for trouble. Similarly - your friend should avoid any students union bars, as many of the privileged young people there rather fancy themselves as romanticized, Gringo bashing, Che Guevaras - self important, self appointed, spokespersons of the oppressed (people like radical Islamists and terrorists). But most of these students are just delusional dick heads that will be working (quite lucratively) for Morgan Stanley and Merrill Lynch in 10 - 15 years time.
So long as your friend is sensible and (like all sensible travelers) avoids any dangerous leafy enclaves of privilege and pretence they should be fine. But if perchance your friend does meet with any hostility, tell them to stand their ground, and forcefully intone ?Shut it, yer poncy middleclass twat! Or I'll stuff that stupid fucking Che Guevara hat right down your freakin' neck!" That should do the trick. Hope this helps.
Officer Dibble ? Glad to be of service
