There is a cache bug in IE7 that can cause this with PHP websites. If the sites that don't work are PHP based that is probably the answer.
Do the sites work with Firefox or Opera?

In that case I would suggest that it is the proxy cache of aol which enforces security or content restrictions, so you basically get a sort of Parental Control feature and images/content get blocked.
There isn't really much you can do about it.
The proxy cache spiders the web and collects content, then when you access the web via aol you don't necessarily get everything from the website that you visit. Some may come from aol proxy servers. It's their way of speeding up the internet. If that content is flagged as a content restriction by aol then you will get what you describe. The IE7 bug is similar(ish) but fixable.
If it's working for you in IE7 then stick with it.
