DVD to Quicktime

Hi
Seen as you boys and girls use video all day long I'd figure this would be a good spot to get an answer.
I'm doin best man for a mate and his Mum has given me a DVD with vids of him growing up - usual embarrasing stuff. I want to try and convert some of the dvd film to quicktime but i'm havin a few probs. (apologies if this is basic but i'm just getting to grips with this stuff)
I have tried using VLC to transcode the dvd to mpeg1 but it wont workfor some reason - any of the succesful files will only play in VLC and not in quicktime.
I then saw a demo of cinematize which looks like it will do the trick but only for a full version.
My query is does anybody know a way that I can convert images from DVD to a quicktime format without using cinematize, or perhaps give me an explanation why the VLC option might not be working.
Also important to say that I am not trying to rip a commercial dvd or Crack anything. The dvd is one my mates mum copied from cinecam onto VHS a few years back and then onto DVD with her DVD/VHS combo.
If people dont want to help in a forum Id appreciate if you could contact me on email.
thanks
Joe
