Hi
I have set up a new site

Rather than putting vids onto dvd and vhs I am puuting them direct onto the net.
I am also putting all my new photographs direct onto this site.

I am going to put up some 1 min mpeg files, these are almost dvd quality (filmed on HI8 tape).
The big problem is, is that on a 56k modem it takes about 45 mins to download and upload. And thats just for a one min clip. What a pain.
To get round this a bit, I am also putting stills from the clips up, saves you dowloading the film files.
I put up a lot of small files, these load up quick, but the quality is low.
I would love to put up say a 15 min film or better still 1 hour, but its going to take yonks to download.
Any advise on this would be of help.
I am thinking of buying a vid camera that takes internet files as I thought these might be smasller files but good quality.

One solution is not to use MPEGs - try using RM or WMV which are normally smaller files sizes without losing any quality. The only downside is tnat WMV is a Microsoft format and there may be compatability issues with other operating systems.
No matter which encoding format you choose (unless you go for DIVX or something similar which will mean the file sizes will typically be 50MB plus) you will never get almost DVD quality.
Further to that if the originals are filmed in HI-8, even if you encode in DIVX, the same will apply - you need to use DV as a minimum.

"RM?" "WMV?" Huh? Sounds a bit proprietary to me.
Try encoding to QuickTime. It?s a serious cross platform video format and the quality of a downloadable QuickTime file is excellent, well up to the "DVD Quality" mentioned - Which is why the major Hollywood studios encode their downloadable previews in this format. To get an example of what can be achieved go to the site of the forthcoming ?HULK? movie and download the small, or medium sized previews ? the sizes that can be realistically downloaded on a 56K modem. You will note that the quality of the preview is far in excess of what you are likely to have on Hi-8.
Folks talk about DVD quality, but you know DVD ?quality? is not all that amazing. Although it?s digital it?s a highly compressed format that means throwing away a lot of detail and picture info to squeeze the movies onto those small shiny discs. And if the disc is badly authored, on the cheap, it can turn out to be worse than a well recoded analogue VHS tape.

Hi
Some great advise from you all.
I will try quicktime.
I did put some files into real media format, but my pc does not like to play real media, others have told me the same.
Out of interest, anyone know of any 'cheap or free' softwear that will convert mpeg files into other formats.
I am also using linone and every hour or so i get disconected so loading big files is a nightmear at the moment.
I guess in a few years when storage on the internet is almost free and we are all on super fast internet conections, all films will be dowloaded off the net rather than buying vhs or dvds.
