This bloke seems frighteningly brilliant. How I wish he'd tell me how he does it..eg tonight a load of people had to guess how many balls were in a jar.One person wrote down the answers of the guessers who approached her with their guess. At the end Derren gets a bit of paper out of the jar with the result on '136'.Only one person has got the right answer and Derren has described her perfectly..also he adds all the guesses up and then divides it by the number of guessers to find the mean..Lo and behold its 136.Could it be that this is pure theatre and everyone is in on it and its a massive con..any one got any ideas

I've always liked Derren Brown, and I've always liked the fact most people like him unlike the twat that is formerly known as David Blaine.
I think most of what he does is based around suggestion and manipulation, all of which are techniques we all possess just don't know we do. He has always said what he is doing isnt magic or illusion based around "magic", which again i've always appreciated. Exactly what he is doing would be fascinating to find out though hehe.

Yeah, check out the Simon Pegg Christmas present trick, which he explained afterwards.
If I was to see Derren approach, I'd run the other way. Scary, but smart.

Aside from suggestion and manipulation, the other thing he's said about his act is that nobody would believe the lengths to which he'll go to prepare a trick. I wonder if he targets audience members even before they've gone to see him? Who knows? However he does it, he's a brilliant ginger showman.

the work he puts into a 'trick' is amazing
I recall him saying about one that had gone wrong on his live tour - his trick was to work out the phone number of a random audience member, in order to do this he memorised all the phone books of the towns he was going to visit - took him six months
however it all went pear shaped as he didn't think about how many people would be ex-directory - the trick was a flop - six months work down the pan
