So another European Cup final is nearly upon us and I suspect that Liverpool will win it on pens once more, just because they can. People talk about about Liverpools rich tradtion but if you took away all the trophies they've won on penalties they'd probably only have the Lancashire senior cup to their name! I'm not anti Liverpool by the way but I honestly cant remember Liverpool winning a cup competition without coming through a penalty competition. As Ricky Tomlinson might put it "Liverpool best team in Europe, MY ARSE|

I'm not a Liverpool fan myself, but I'll back any English (or nominally English!) team in Europe - even Man Utd and Arsenal.

Also, I think that if you actually look at the stats, you'll find that the number of trophies they've won on pens is actually quite small.

The only ones that spring to mind (without having to look things up) are the European Cups 1984 and 2005 and the FA Cup in 2006. They might have won a League Cup on pens once (though I'm not sure) - but look at what they DIDN'T win on pens (again just off the top of my head):

All those League titles
FA Cup 1974, 1986, 1989, 1992
European Cups 1977, 1978
UEFA Cup 1973, 1976, 2001
Several League Cups (early 80s)
... and I'm sure there were others as well.

No sooner had I posted above than another couple of non-penalty Liverpool trophy wins sprang to mind:

European Cup 1981
FA Cup 1965, 2001

So what at least they win them and not lose which is a good ratio! Like it was mentioned not all cups have been won by pens Infact the number of wins by pens is small.

Interesting to read the following quote on the BBC website from a Liverpool spokesman:

"Next year we want to contend for both the Premiership and Champions League. Actually, we want to challenge for all four competitions."

At least they have the decency to admit they only went after one trophy this year... let's hope Milan win tomorrow.

The key word is "win".

I'm a life long Man U supporter but I'll be cheering Liverpool on in the final. At least they are an English team that include some British players unlike some others. The spirit shown in the last final meeting with Milan to come back from 3 nil was awesome and they deserved to win in the end.
