DVD Download/Buy/Rental

Hi Everyone, just a quick question, I know many of you purchase your porn via websites, members sites, downloads and some from the licensed shops.

We are re-branding our shop next month on our yearly renewal of our license and want to look at hiring out the films, not just selling them.

What are peoples thoughts about this?

Many thanks

Wendyx

If you were able to rent by mail, that would be the answer to all our prayers, I reckon. I guess that's not possible, legally.

Hi Ned, personally I don't think that will ever happen, renting or buying via mail within the UK.

The only way you could legally do it by mail is to base a rental business abroad. It's not illegal to import R18 material (I think !wink! )

But nobody is going to do that.

Online sales with downloads might be ok as long as it's perfect DVD quality and not DRM protected. Speaking personally, I'm not keen on downloading like that. If I'm going to buy something, I'd rather have the full packaging and a factory produced DVD. Old fashioned maybe, but I miss vinyl LPs and the glorious gatefold sleeve art they used to have !wink!

Companies like Simply Porn and Your Choice are based abroad and sell DVDs to UK customers, but I am sure they would not be interested in the renting side, however, I would like to look at the possibility to do the renting via my retail shop, to give customers the choice of either purchasing an R18 dvd or becoming a member and then renting a dvd. Just wondered whether anyone could shed some light on this system if they belonged to it at their local sex shop.

The topic of DRM is indeed a controversial and emotive one.

The problem when some punters want the DRM scrapped is that they believe that they'll pay the same fee as a weekly rental and then be able to keep it for the 6.99 or whatever it is they pay.

The reality is if they want the DRM scrapped and download it to keep then they'll have to pay the full price the same as they do for the Dvd. Most don't think of that.

Remember also that it's a lot of the content owners i.e. porn producers who insist on the DRM being present and not the VOD companies.

Also remember that it's not there to piss you off. It's there to prevent piracy.

Just to fill you in Mike, I own a sex shop and have the lowest price of dvds in the area, offer exchange, freebies all sorts, I don't agree with some of the shops prices but that is their choice. The reason behind the question was to see how technically I could operate a rental service for the benefit of the customer as well as of course increasing my turnover, I am a businesswoman after all, but god help anyone who wants to make a living in this country being self-employed!!
