Obsessed with celebrities?

Post by b217bravo »

This week,
Friday-football. The Beckham circus arrived in town again, the only name talked about, ad nauseum, Beckham, listening to the 'pundits' he only has to turn up to gaurantee a win against any team.

Saturday- Epsom Derby meeting. The papers & tv were full of only one name, Dettori, I know that she is a lezzie but Clair Baldwing was wetting her knickers every time she drooled about the guy, the way they went on about him I thought he was giong to run the course himself & beat all the horses. I realise he must be a good jockey but he does get all the best horses to ride, I am sure that there are other jockeys given the same mounts would be just as succesful.

"Sadly he is a one trick pony great at set pieces but lacking anything else"

As much as I agree it seems our national team is full of "no trick ponies" so he's probably justified his inclusion with his last performance.

I don't give a toss about 'celebrity' in sport if they are good enough to attract all the trappings that now (sadly) come with being good then fair play to them.

I was lucky enough to see Beckham on loan at North End when he scored some goals including 1 direct from a corner and thought that lad is going to be a star.

He fulfilled his potential, made money at the same time by doing it and I don't have much time for those who slag him off just because he became very successful.

The only question that matters about Beckham or any other sportsman is can they do the job.

In Beckham's case the answer is yes. England's 1st goal from a set piece since he was dropped.

Was pisses me off about the Beckham saga is the way he appears to get blamed for everything:

Alice In Blunderland wrote:

you would have thought they would have learnt to keep their
foot on the pedal right to the end after their defeat to France
with two goals in stoppage time at Euro 2004 cost them a 1-0
win.

He wasn't even on the pitch when the goal went in. Add to that if Terry was still on the pitch the goal probably wouldn't have happened and it shows that although the top (1st) 11 could be good enough those that make up the rest of the squad currently aren't.

Also with a 'proper' game going on in a few days it's not a good idea to have your team going with your foot on the pedal for 90+ minutes for a friendly.

With regards to Dettori he is top of his trade and gets the trappings that come with it.

Other jockeys probably would have the same success if given his horses but to get the horses you have to be good. Dettori didn't turn up to a stable one day, say I want to be a Jockey and have the owner say fine here's the favourite for the next race.

He worked up the ladder became good and because of his skills was given the horses to fulfill his potential and make dosh for the owners.

As I said I don't give a toss about celebrity in sport but the media do. They like to put anyone on a pedestal so they can kick them off it as soon as they get chance which is something I think is very very sad.
