yes they do work but it depends on how deep the scratchs are or how bad the damage is
some times it can take one then one atempt to repair or make the disc readible again

hope that helps

I brought the Skip Doctor from Maplins for ?30 (Sale).

After putting a dvd thru this grinder it did improve it but not completely so I gave up and returned it to my friend who fixed it completely and without spending ?30.........

This is what he said.-

Did a bit of research and after trying some software solutions eventually came up with a hardware winner ? BRASSO !!! If you?re interested, do a google search on ?scratched dvd? and ?brasso? and you?ll find lot?s of info - even a study comparing proprietary products with normal household cleaners etc.

CD Repair Kits - versus various goops from kitchen & bathroom .-

Hope this is useful.

believe it or not, I've tried rubbing a solution of toothpaste and a little water on my discs, with one finger, in a circular motion, following the grooves. It seems to flatten any surface scratches and i thought it worked better than a stupid kit i bought.

Try it on a disc you don't value too much first and see if it works.

Brasso and similar mildly abrasive polishes certainly work.
Always rub at right-angles to the read direction i.e. from the centre of the disc to the edge, never be tempted to go around the disc.
