And while we're on the subject, why the hell did we ever get lumbered with that dreaful dirge that is Flower Of Scotland? We take exception to one of the original verses of God Save The Queen, but go even further back into history to have a go at the English.
It's too popular culture to ever be an anthem, but just look at how crowds at sporting occasions react to 500 Miles (I'm Gonna Be). A piece of music that stirs the blood, gets the heart racing---and the people singing it are never half a beat ahead of the people playing it.

A couple of old oom-pa-pa-oom-pa-pa tunes if you ask me. The type you'd find playing on an old 'His Master's Voice' gramaphone player.

I absolutely hate the English national anthem, as far as I'm concerned the queen and her brood can f**k off back to Bavaria sharpish.
Just because I'm a republican doesn't mean that I am not a patriot, and it's quite difficult deciding which tune would be a suitable replacement, I quite like the one that's often played on the t.v. serial "Sharpe"; "Over the hills and far away". Don't know who wrote it though.
Just a thought, I wonder how many Yanks know that the "Star Spangled Banner" was written by a Limey.

I stand corrected, you're right, Hanover, not Bavaria.
I'm glad you reminded me of that ol' lush being Scottish.... so you lot in Scotland can have every last one of them, Ha!
Can you also take "Two pies" Prescott too?

"I absolutely hate the English national anthem"
Isn't it the British national anthem?
One of the anomalies of devolution.

Probably the same amount who know that the lyrics were written by American. Or perhaps the same amount who know the authorship of God Save The Queen is just as disputed.

Get rid of 'God Save the Queen'.
'Jerusalem' is the real anthem of England.
If you want to have an anthem for the UK & the commonwealth then 'Land of Hope and Glory' should suffice.
