I'm sure these people are a very few bad apples, but still you wonder about the integrity---not to mention intelligence---of some of those representing western culture in Iraq:

You got to remember C their Americas best of the worst
I can imagine their would be a level of frustration on the marines part
What with the war going badly and the army extending tours by 3/6/9 months due to the lack of anyone back home joining up
the sooner they leave, the sooner the real fighting can start

I suppose.
This case just has echoes of the "any Irishman will do" policy of the security forces here in the 1970s and 80s.

Your most likely on the money
In all wars bad things happen to civilians in the cross fire
I suspect vietnam would have had similar tales
Given the nature of the war its quite surprising their haven't been more of these fit up jobs.
Maybe down to embedded reporting which in every way has been a miserable failure due to its lack of independence

I've highlighted that case before, Mag. One of the troops involved owned up, I think, in order to get a lesser sentence. The ringleader had left the army, and was no longer liable to face military charges---and of course the US refuses to allow any of its personnel to face war crimes legislation outside America.
As far as I'm aware, those involved will stand trial. But as you point out, the media hasn't exactly fallen over itself in reporting this shameful, disgusting crime perpetrated against an innocent family.

This was the last I could find on the BBC website:
(Forced me to break my promise of no more links tonight, but this crime was thoroughly despicable. These bastards should rot in hell.)

It's what I call the 'Yugoslavia' argument, and could also be applied to
Afghanistan [both pre- and post-Soviet invasion]. Even the most
benevolent power-bloc should make damn' sure any projected 'police
action' will not result in a situation worse than the status quo ante.
And if in doubt, follow Hippocrates' dictum: "Do no harm", rather than "all
that is necessary for Evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing", which
all too often only proves that "the road to Hell is paved with good
intentions".
Shit....I'm all confused now.
"Mony a Mickle mak's a Muckle". "Donald, whaur's yer troosers"?
Phew ! That's better.
