Allegedly the "Bill" to whom Denis Thatcher's letters in the Eye were addressed. He was on Have I Got News For You a few years back and still seemed rather sprightly.

94! - a good innings!

Still writing up to a fortnight before he popped off.

Still writing at 91; a man almost universally-liked [almost too much so for
his own good- he could and should have been 'nastier' when the
Telewag needed dragging into the modern age]; and an occupant of
Saltwood before that idiot Alan Clark got his hooks on it.

It wasn't until I read his obituary that I became aware he was the inspiration for Boot from Scoop (cleft sticks a speciality).

.. .and he tried unsuccessfully to rein back Thatcher.

Bill was also awarded the military cross in WW2, a true gent !thumbsup!
