I'm having yet another problem with my pc. When i try to play videos there's no sound when i look for help it says either i have no sound card, its not activated or it's broken.
I'm pretty clueless with computers. so any help would be well recieved.
Basicaly if i have no sound card can i buy one and install it myself or do i need a tech to do it?
If it's not activated where do i go to activate it?
Thanks for any help.

It could be any number of things without having a look.
1) You could have no sound card, and no onboard sound either.
2) No sound card, but have onboard sound, with it turned off in the bios.
3) No sound card, but have onboard sound, it's turned on in the bios, but you've not installed the drivers.
4) You've got a sound card, but installed no drivers.
5) You've got both a sound card, and onboard sound, but they're conflicting with eachother.
It's easy enough to check if windows is detecting any audio hardware through the control panel, but if you've not been through your bios options before, then it's a little more difficult to detect, and depends greatly on your motherboard, it's bios version, and onboard hardware/chip.
If it's a prebuilt system, and pretty new, I'm guessing you've got onboard sound, it's on by default in the bios, yet you've not installed the audio drivers. Check the disks that came with your pc and look out for any audio related drivers.

See thats lost me !laugh! i know i should read more about computers but god it's dull. Ive looked in the control panel and theres a sound section but i don't want to press anything and fuck it up.

I mean, it's pretty hard to tell you what to do (maybe someone else can).
It's an old pc by the sounds of it, but do you get the Win 98 jingle on start up & shut down?
