Not happy to hear that the latest Rankin book is the last of Rebus. the television adaptations may not have been great but the books have always been top reading.

Unlike P. D. James, whose policeman hero should have retired decades ago, Rankin has gone for believability and had Rebus retire when he would in real life. Don't know what his plans are for future books---Siobhan, with Rebus consulting?---but I don't think we've seen the last of the (ex-)inspector yet.

I only saw one TV adaptation with Ken Stott and, excellent actor though he is, he wasn't my idea of the character.

John Hannah was just dreadful---but it was an ego trip for him (done by his own production company).

I agree Hannah was too young for the role, but he was forced into it as the channel insisted he play Rebus. When his production company bought the rights they planned to use another actor.

I do think the atmosphere in the Rebus films Hannah made is much closer to the original books than the Stott episodes which have been much to short and cut out loads of plot to get them into a shorter running time.

trouble is Hannah just didn't look right, far too handsome and not old enough.Stott was better but still not evocative of the books. Rebus comes across as taller in the books.
