Burglar phones sex lines while victim sleeps

Whetu Barrett had no hang-ups when it came to his burglaries, spending two hours chatting on 0900 sex lines - as his 85-year-old victim slept soundly in a nearby room. When the victim woke in the morning she realised she had been robbed - but the real shock came weeks later when she received her phone bill, including a $138 charge for the burglar's eight calls to adult chat lines. The following month he was doing it again, burgling another house and this time racking up a $115 bill during an hour of steamy chat sessions.
Whetu Gary Desmond Barrett, who is in prison, pleaded guilty to three burglary charges in Hastings District Court yesterday.
On the night of December 17, the unemployed man, 30, broke into a house in Charles St in Hastings. While the lone 85-year-old occupant slept in her room, Barrett went through the house, stealing a camera, television and phone. He then spent two hours and $138.09 making eight calls to 0900 adult chat lines.
The victim told The Dominion Post yesterday that she was pleased she slept through the visit.
"It was mighty lucky. If I'd got up I would have said: `What the dickens are you doing here?'
"He was there some time around 2am. I know that because he made a lot of 0900 calls for which I was charged.
"He took my phone too. Very cheeky. And a drink from the fridge." She discovered the next morning that she had been burgled when she noticed her phone was missing.
A further shock greeted her in her next phone bill: "I'd certainly never call an 0900 number. How stupid. I mean, hardly," she said with a laugh.
In early January this year, Barrett broke into a property in Southampton St West and stole a laptop, silver cutlery and clothing. Police later recovered the laptop.
While at the property, Barrett used a phone to make three calls to 0900 chat lines, clocking up $115.23 in charges.
Barrett, serving a three-year prison sentence for a previous burglary, will be sentenced in November - and faces a total reparations bill of $1081.32 - including repaying his victims for the 0900 calls.
