R.I.P

I have news good for some bad for others, Since the changing of the guidlines re 18R we at Devlin films have fought to bring decent UK products to the punters, we have fought against the whole industry to serve the punters, trying everything to get home grown products into your local sex shops or into the mail order companys catelogues. We did better than the rest we even got pricing agreements from some of the big shops which are still in place.
We have been faced by a closed shop policy where shop owners buy their own rights and sell the units in their own shops and swap with other shop owners, NOT ALL SHOPS ARE LIKE THIS, some have been great with us and helped by promoting our stuff on the shelves etc. Guys like Marino who have been working in the industry for years can't sell a unit, People like Remmington and Marcus Allen who helped built our industry can't earn a shilling out of it, they face this closed shop issue everywhere. I know as punters most of you don't care as long as you can get a video or DVD why bother, but I also know a few care about our industry,
Anyway we have thought long and hard about our next move so here it is,
We have sold rights to all the Phil McCavity products to a big distributer so we close our copy lab next week. They will go on selling our titles and as they are much bigger than us we hope they can get the product out everywhere,
We are now concentrating on productions only and start next week with a whole new series of Fuck Truck and the following week with a big movie "The Perverse Will" which will be big buget six sex scenes good strong cast and directed by Alan Piad (from Marc Dorcel).
I look forward to answering all the questions you may have,

Jim Deans (Phil McC)

Sorry to hear of your troubles: that's the way the industry seems to be going: the 'little guys' will be left out in the cold. I'm glad you've managed to make an accommodation.
"Alan Piad from VMD"- do you mean Alain Payet by any chance? If so, that's the best news I've had all month: can I pre-order, heh heh?

Who have you made the deal with?
What was your main motivation in doing this deal?
In your Big budget Movie who is the strong cast?
Is this going to be the new standard for the British Industry?
Finally do you believe that the rest will have to follow your path or perish?

cheers

If you recall Officer Dibble predicted this unfortunate turn of events last week, but some forum members prefered to bury their heads in the sand and pretend that everything was hunky-dory in pornoland. Hornetbloke still doesn?t understand. Any future releases will not be Jim's releases, they will be Marc Dorcel's, who I assume Jim will be contracted to, or working for.

Officer Dibble.

Okay then, maybe I should have said looking forward to your new productions. No matter who releases them, they'll still have the Phil McCavity style to them I would imagine.
My heartfelt apologies to anyone else who took offence to what was supposed to be an encouraging post.

Its difficult to say that this is good news.

My major concern is that monopolistic distribution practices
starve U.K. porn producers of funding... in favour of content
from the U.S. which is cheap to license, but may not be what
the viewing public is interested in buying.

Still, if Phil got a decent price for his material, and
it allows a production company to thrive, I have to
congratulate him.

The art of winning a war is knowing when to fight and when
not to fight. I think some chinese geezer said something
like that!

Cheers guys, I can't name the company who bought it cause they are changing the name of their current company to accomodate Devlin Films. The new productions I am doing are my own the Marc Dorcel part is simply to guarantee it sells world wide as rights. we will still keep all rights and sell them where we can. The main reason for the change is simple,
I used to shoot loads of stuff which went on TVX/TAC etc etc I then sold the vhs units to other distributers. when I began selling myself I had so much on the shelves it looked great as I never needed to spend any money on production or buying rights. well now I am running low on raw footage so I would nead to either buy in footage which I have done from other producers and share the profits which I have done (ask Remmington or Marcus). Or produce. I have always prefered to watch movies so thats what I will produce. I have respect from some very big companies in Germany France and Spain all who have offered commisions, but I would prefer to use my own money, the same applies to the cast I will use as many UK people as poss so to keep it at home,
I will sell rights everywhere I can but it will be my productions so Hornet you are correct,, we are in control and not broke so its a good time to change,,,and very important we can actually make movies we have before.. A few of the other UK producers, camera guys etc etc are all offering help as are the models I know so it looks good, I have the budget in the bank so full steam ahead. I will post the filming days so some of you can come along,

A lot of short stories in Rock & Roll and likewise in the porn industry. Jim and I first started working together when he was just a clean shaved young innocent from Glasgow, I think that?s what?s called an oxymoron but you get the idea.
Together we made a number of very successful films, the precursor of the fly on the wall and all the flashing stuff was an innocent little thing called Home Town Girls, this just involved loads of pretty girls travelling around the country stripping and flashing in public, all in the best possible taste. This title added to our collection of quite nice programs that would not offend your old Gran and sold without too many problems. In those days there was a shortage of material and a shortage of producers so maybe we had a chance where today we might not have got a look in.

From there we went onto the hardcore material, producing for the likes of Sarah Young and others and meeting a different type of person. We also crossed the path of the great Berth Milton again. (Father not Son). I had worked with him years ago shooting still sets for Private and suffering quite a lot of hardship because of this. At our meeting at his villa in Spain where at that time he had Uncle Ernie working for him! He told us to Fuck off out of his house, but could we leave the sample video we, at his request, had brought for him. Even a Swede could understand the reply!
I give this as an illustration into the kind of people there are about in this industry. You have the likes of the polite Hans Moser & Dirk Rotermund at one end and at the other!!!
I also at that time made the first of the Fuck Truck series, called then ?The Bonk Mobile? . Jim went on to take this series from strength to strength. It is one of those projects that deserve to be carried on and I would love to be involved in that. From a potted history to the present. We can?t hope for things to stay the same. Porn in the UK is now the giant business it always has been in the rest of the world and those business ethics are the norm. If a producer of glass widgets gets beaten down on price why should not the porno producer suffer the same fate? The shortsighted won?t have noticed that the quality of the widgets is now piss poor and that they are paying more for them from less suppliers. That the porno industry in the UK is ruled over by a mere handful of people is just a mirror image of the rest of the industrialised world. Global Porno Ltd. is just around the corner!
As for Jim, well he may be a bit down, I myself don?t believe that, I have NEVER seen him down. Years ago he came up with the best idea he had ever had, it was not because he wanted to earn a load of money, he just had to satisfy some authority or other that he was of good character, What I hear you say, why have to prove this, our Jim, some mistake! He came up with a mad idea that would undoubtedly have put him into the good books, might even have been Sir Jim now. (If he wants to tell the world about it he will or you can read it in my memoirs, out soon at an exorbitant price). That he did not go down that well beaten track to fame and fortune owes more to his love of the sex business and less to his business acumen. There by hangs a tail. We are porno producers, we are not always the best at marketing ourselves, and we need help from those who have this expertise. Had Jim been able to employ a good marketing man things may have ended different? He will remember the marketing genius I employed at Strand in the early days. He has since found religion and will not work in the industry, so maybe there is a moral somewhere.
Others of us have been where Jim is. See an earlier post when I had to sell all my original titles for a piddling sum. I was in the same situation, I could produce but my marketing was not so hot. Even those who do have great marketing ability can come to grief in this business. The great Hans Moser, again top producer but also good marketing man but can?t fight against the incoming tide of mediocrity. (He is still there and still fighting). While we as customers want more for less, and while we are prepared to accept second and third best things will continue to get worse. You as the consumer of porn will just get more of the dross that is being turned out by the never-ending proliferation of just out of school porno producers. Does anyone seriously watch the crap spewed out from our British satellite porn stations? Makes you cry.

Ahh well. Good luck mate, if you need any help call, but mainly don?t let the bastards beat you.
