After you convert a partition to NTFS, you cannot convert it back.

Yes you're right but you lose all data - in XP go into My Computer, right click on the desired drive, choose Format, in the window that pops up select FAT32 in the drop down, choose Quick Format and simply click Start.

And this my fail towards the end if the drive is more than 32Gb.

Also if this is not an option, open a command prompt and type:

format drive_letter: /FS:FAT32

Or ask someone who has a Mac to format it for you.

Can't you set the hdd as a primary through the bios and use fdisk to delete the formatted partition (either with a boot disk or XP disk)?
